Shadows Return to Ellis Island
JR Brings Ellis Island's Abandoned Hospital to Life

The article is about an art project in the abandoned Ellis Island immigrant hospital named "Unframed-Ellis Island" by the French artist JR. It is a large scale street portraiture project where he used the actual immigrant pictures taken at the hospital 100 or so year ago and implemented and installed them to the hospitals abandoned walls, windows, doors and hallways. His idea is to respect the architecture and bring those memories back. I've picked this article because it captured my attention since I've always wanted to visit Ellis Island, and now through the pictures I've seen from the gallery, I feel the urge to go visit more than ever! The images were fascinating, but at the same time some were creepy and cold, gave me goose bumps. I've definitely put down this abandoned hospital on my bucket list to live in the moment of back in those days while I'm visiting. It was a really interesting article, and I was amazed by the artist's creative approach.

Conscientious Article Review

A Conversation with Bahar Habibi

The article was a brief interview with an artist from Iran, Bahar Habibi, who was one of the winner of last years Conscientious Portfolio Competition. I've picked this article because her name grabbed my attention as it is also a name we have in Turkey, and as I read through the interview, I sympathized with her when she says she felt like an outsider with lots of memories, familiarities, and friends going back to her country and taking pictures. The nostalgia in her photographs and the way she shared her feelings openly as the interviewer asked, was really engaging and interesting.

Laura Stevens: Another November

The reason why I selected this specific article is because of the title. I was born in November, so seeing the title as "Another November" pulled me into the article. The article is a review about photographer Laura Stevens work, series of staged portraits to reflect the pain and loneliness of ending a relationship. I like how well she portrayed the emotions in the photographs as it gives you a feeling of melancholy with the crestfallen alone woman in each picture. What I've read and saw were definitely interesting, but depressing a bit too.

I've picked this specific article because the picture grabbed my attention. I love re-sized objects and the picture of two giant folded chairs was what got me into the article. The article was about True North, sculptures displayed by different artists as an inaugural show along the Heights Boulevard esplanade in Houston, TX. I loved the fact that these sculptures were placed along the streets and people can come see, take pictures without even needing to pay for it. Amazing re-sized sculptures. I wish I could go down there and see them with my own eyes!
